Stone Temple Pilots have finished recording a new album, which may come as a surprise to some fans. Band members had been teasing the possibility of some acoustic stuff, but singer Jeff Gutt told Rock Talk with Mitch Lafon that something else entirely happened in the studio.

“It has a vibe to it,” Gutt said of the new record. “It’s very instrumentally sound and sonic and it’s beautiful. It’s actually finished. It’s all new songs... We were only supposed to do a few songs, but it turned into a full record because we had so much creativity happening at the time… It’s definitely different.”

Even though the album is done, it isn’t going to be released anytime soon. That’s because Stone Temple Pilots had already been planning a 25th anniversary reissue of 1994’s Purple. It will be released on September 13th in several formats. The Super Deluxe Edition will include 3 CDs and one LP. The collection features previously unreleased demos, rarities and live recordings.

Stone Temple Pilots will also be going on tour with Rival Sons this fall.
The trek begins on September 13th in Baltimore and runs through October 9th in San Diego.
