It took exactly two days for Taylor Swift to claim the title of best-selling album of 2019.
The pop star released Lover on Friday, and it was already approaching sales of 500,000 by Saturday, according to Nielsen Music. That was enough to pass Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper’s A Star is Born. The soundtrack sold 444,000 this year, but 1.148 million since it was released in October 2018.
Swift’s seventh studio album is also having the biggest sales week for any album since her own reputation sold 1.216 million copies in December 2017.
The 29-year-old has described Lover as a celebration of love in all its complexities, coziness and chaos. She noted that it’s the first album of hers that she ever owned – a reference to her public dismay over the sale of her back catalogue to industry heavyweight Scooter Braun. Swift is vowing to re-record her albums to regain control of the music.
