When the first trailer for “Sonic the Hedgehog” was released in 2019, fans of the iconic video game character were disappointed and slightly terrified with the character's horrid CGI design that included beady eyes, long fingers, and, worst of all, human teeth.
The negative reaction forced Paramount Pictures to pull the film for a complete redesign of its titular character.
Animators went back to the drawing board to make updates to the character that better reflected his origins and gave him a more classic and recognizable look.
Sonic splashes into theaters on Valentine’s Day, February 14, nearly three months after its originally scheduled release date, but if early reactions are any indication, the redesign may have singlehandedly saved the film.
Both critics and audiences alike are pleased with the studio’s decision to listen to the fandoms and make the necessary changes needed to a beloved childhood character who initially missed the mark.
“The new Sonic is so adorable that it almost makes up for a pretty generic plot and a human cast,” The Verge reports.
The adorable hedgehog may be the main character, but the human cast seems to be the biggest draw.
James Marsden has gotten praise for playing Tom, a kind-hearted sheriff that buddies up to Sonic, but most of the acclaim has gone to Jim Carrey, who makes his return to the big screen in the role of Dr. Ivo Robotnik, the tech-obsessed scientist and cartoonish villain who aims to gain control of Sonic’s powers.
Some Twitter users were lucky enough to find themselves in an early screening of the film and gave it all the “likes” and glowing recommendations.
One user called the film “fun, silly and charming,” adding that it was nostalgic and something “Sonic fans will enjoy.”
Another user said she went into the film with low expectations but was “pleasantly surprised by how much fun [she] had.”
Expectedly, there was a lot of love for Ben Schwartz, who voiced Sonic, and the aforementioned Carrey.
One user admitted, “the movie does a great job bringing Sonic to the big screen in a fun, fast paced adventure. Jim Carrey also was solid as Robotnik and his banter with Sonic was perfect.”
A second user echoed those sentiments writing, “Jim Carrey as Dr. Robotnik stole the show & Ben Schwartz voicing Sonic was perfect.”
If you’re looking for a fun film to see this Valentine’s Day with your significant other or your kids, you won’t regret Sonic.
And a piece of advice from some Twitter fans: don’t skip the end credits!
