Ariana Grande and Social House have teamed up for a contemplative new groove and a fantasy-filled new video.
“Boyfriend” finds Grande inviting the duo of Michael “Mikey” Foster and Charles “Scootie” Anderson into the spotlight, proving to be excellent dance partners for the lovelorn singer as flesh out complicated feelings. The duo of Social House have been longtime collaborators with Ariana, helping to write and produce massive songs “thank u, next” and “7 rings” with Grande.
“I feel like this song captures a common theme in the lives of so many people I know” Grande explained on Twitter Thursday. “People want to feel love but don’t want to define their relationship, and have trouble fully committing or trusting or allowing themselves to fully love someone, even though they want to.”
“We wanted to make something uplifting that captures that feeling of being afraid to take the leap and trust, being afraid of being hurt or feeling like you won’t be enough for that person,” she added. “But also how it feels to have a crippling crush on someone.”
Along with the song comes a new video, which finds Grande and Social House imagining vicious attacks in the name of love. Grande tackles a woman, shoots an arrow through the hand of another, and ultimately blasts lasers from her bra – all in the name of love… or jealousy.
Grande is set to play at Lollapalooza this weekend, and will take her Sweetener World Tour to Europe later this month. She returns for more shows in the US in November. You can find the full list of dates here.
