Charli XCX, the pop star who wears the "PC Music," e-girl crown well, can also add DIY Queen to her title too. In April, Charli announced that she would be releasing a new album that would solely be created while in quarantine at her Los Angeles home, and rely on artistic submissions from fans around the world.
Now, a month after her initial social media announcement, How I’m Feeling Now is set to drop this Friday, May 15. Leading up to the release of the "made at home" album, Charli dropped two singles, “forever” and “claws” in order to give twitter stans and fans a taste of what we could expect from the synth princess. The two new bops transport the listener off to a surreal dreamscape and certainly help to distract from everything happening in the real world, yet the fact that the new music was created at home helps remind us that art can flourish in times of uncertainty.
Aside from knowing exactly what the fans needed, XCX took to Twitter to pen a personal thank you note to all the artists who helped contribute to her album. From writing verses to her songs with viewers on Instagram Live, to sourcing fanciful artwork for her official single releases, to using beats from new producers, the singer and producer thanks these up and coming artists by Instagram “@“ in her Twitter letter. “I couldn’t have made this album without you!” says Charli.
The artist explains that the email submission account that was set up for the project was “bombarded with wild beats, artwork and ideas and it’s been so inspiring going through it all… This process has introduced me to new work and I am so grateful for that.”
Along with thanking everyone involved with “#howimfeelingnow” Charli announces that she will be putting together a book that spotlights and documents all the art that coincidences with the music. She shares, “I’d love to include your own artworks, poems, writings within this book, whether they were created during lockdown or in response to the album process.”
Charli previewed sample pages of the homespun book, which will also go on pre-order this Friday when the album drops. All profits made from book sales and new merchandise will be donated to LA Alliance, a Los Angeles based organization that advocates for the homeless population in the city.
Just to reiterate, we adore Charli XCX, and this crowd-sourced, do-it-yourself project is an absolute inspiration. How I’m Feeling Now reminds us that it’s ok to be as productive as you can be during this time, but no matter what, art in any medium will always be there for us to use as a tool to heal and cope. Thank you Charli.
