Demi Lovato, Tiffany Thornton, Allisyn Ashley Arm, Doug Brochu, Sterling Knight, Audrey Whitby, Matthew Scott Montgomery, Shayne Topp and Damien Haas -- the cast of the beloved Disney TV shows Sonny With A Chance and So Random - all got together for a virtual zoom meeting over the weekend.
"I went to rehab. Several times," said Lovato after Allisyn Arm asked what everyone had been up to recently.
The former cast mates spoke candidly about the struggles Lovato has had in dealing with mental health. She first went into rehab at the age of 19, after exiting Sonny... following the show's second season, receiving treatment for “physical and emotional issues.”
"When I went away to treatment for the first time, I remember you were my biggest inspiration coming out of it," Lovato told Tiffany Thornton.
"When I left, you don't expect the show to go on without you, but it did," she told the room. "I couldn't have been happier for all of you, and I just wasn't in a period of time where I was ready to be on camera again. I could not go back to that environment and there were other things that factored into it."
Demi remembers being "so miserable and angry" while working on the set, saying she felt like she was "being overworked," but has since looked back with fonder memories.
"I felt bad because when I went back to 'Will and Grace,' I was like 'gosh, I miss Sonny so much' and I would do anything to recreate the set because I miss that environment, the fun times that we would have. It was just so great. It definitely makes me question what I want to do in the future, more acting, more singing, or what."
Later on, Thornton was also visited by memories of the set - specifically how Demi's dressing room was always set at a balmy "98 degrees every day."
Lovato responded saying, "I had an eating disorder and I was underweight and freezing... people would come in, I'd be covered in a blanket and people would say, 'why is it 80 degrees in here?' I was like, 'because I'm freezing.' They would be like, 'oh my god, what's wrong with you?'"
Whether or not we should expect a fully produced reunion of the Sonny... cast, that's up for debate. Lovato says she foresees working on a whole new project with the crew.
"I miss spending time with you and joking… If we were ever to do anything, I think we should just do a whole new thing."
That's not a hard "no."
