After the news broke that ‘Glee’ star, Naya Rivera’s body was found at Southern California’s Lake Piru, so many fans, friends and family took to social media to mourn the loss of the actress and singer.
In particular, Demi Lovato spoke out about her powerful friendship and career moments with Naya. In season 5 of Glee, Demi had a reoccurring role on the series as Rivera’s character, Santana Lopez’s girlfriend.
On being able to play the role of Dani, Lovato shares, “I’ll forever cherish the opportunity to play your girlfriend on Glee.” Lovato continues her Instagram caption by explaining, “the character you played was groundbreaking for tons of closeted queer girls (like me at the time) and open queer girls, and your ambition and accomplishments were inspiring to Latina women all over the world.”
Many LGBTQ+ fans of Glee and Rivera have also taken to social media to pay tribute to the now revered Santana Lopez. Naya’s role on Glee allowed so many viewers to find their own sexual identities or feel more comfortable in their skin. Rivera’s portrayal of Santana helped many feel like they would not be judged for exploring their own sexuality. One fan tweets, "Thank you for lifting the hearts of the LGBTQIA community."
