Netflix wants to make Selena fans’ hearts go bidi bidi bom bom with its upcoming scripted drama that will tell the story of the Tejano music legend Selena Quintanilla’s childhood and career.
“Selena: The Series” was announced last December and is slated to debut in 2020, and along with a few newcomers, you may recognize some familiar faces in the cast. Meet them below:
(The Walking Dead, The Twilight Saga, Ned’s Declassified School Survival Guide)
Best known for her role on AMC’s “The Walking Dead,” Serratos will lead the cast as the titular Selena Quintanilla. The daughter of a Mexican mother told "Entertainment Tonight" she loves “holding it down for the Latinas” in the zombie drama.
(Desperate Housewives, Scandal, Jane the Virgin)
Ricardo Chavira has made a name for himself alongside strong female leads on shows like “Desperate Housewives,” "Jane the Virgin," and “Scandal.” He’ll be in the same boat portraying Abraham, the patriarch of the Quintanilla family and manager for Selena y Los Dinos.
Marcella Samora Quintanilla
(American Family, Resurrection Blvd.)
Born in Yucatán, Mexico, López moved to the United States at the age of four, and then returned to Mexico from ages 10 to 12 to fully immerse herself in the Spanish language.
The L.A.-based actress will take on the role of Marcella, Selena’s mother and sounding board.
(The Purge, East Los High)
Selena’s older brother, bandmate, and writing partner, A.B. Quintanilla was instrumental to her musical success. Prior to “Selena: The Series,” Chavarria played the lead in the USA Network/Syfy series “The Purge.”
(The Young and the Restless, East Los High)
Gonzalez will join her “East Los High” co-star Chavarria on “Selena: The Series,” playing his sister Suzette. Suzette has kept the legacy of Selena alive, and says the Netflix show will “highlight why Selena will remain a legend for generations to come.”
(Stitchers, First Love)
The younger brother of actor Tyler Posey (Maid in Manhattan, Teen Wolf) will play the role of Chris Perez, Selena’s bandmate, love interest, and eventual husband.
(On My Block)
Astudillo, one of the members of Selena’s band Los Dinos, co-wrote some of Quintanilla’s most recognizable hits including “Bidi Bidi Bom Bom” and “Amor Prohibido.” Before “Selena: The Series,” Macias played the part of Spooky, a gang member who tries to protect his younger brother, on Netflix’s “On My Block.”
Hunter Reese Peña
The son of Mexican immigrants, Peña will portray Ricky Vela, a member of Los Dinos who wrote songs for Selena and became one of A.B.’s most important collaborators.
Carlos Alfredo, Jr.
(Mutt and Chopps)
The son of a Mexican mother and an Ecuadorian father, Alfredo will portray Joe Ojeda, a musician who joined Selena y Los Dinos as a second keyboard player.
Paul Rodriguez, Jr.
(The Curse of La Llorona, Vicious Circle, Street Dreams)
Rodriguez will portray Roger Garcia, a shy guitarist for Los Dinos. Rodriguez is also a professional skateboarder, and has won eight medals at the X games, including four gold medals.
