The 29th season of Dancing with the Stars kicked off with a bang on ABC last night.

On a new season that features celebrities such as Carole Baskin, Johnny Weir, Nev Schulman, Kaitlyn Bristowe, Vernon Davis, and more, it was two musicians that stood out from the crowd.

AJ McLean from Backstreet Boys jived his way into our hearts during his opening “DWTS” routine. McLean was paired with Cheryl Burke as the two performed a jive routine to The Weeknd’s hit song “Blinding Lights.”

If you tuned into “DWTS” expecting to see acrobatics then you got your wish when Nelly took the stage. Alongside his partner Daniella Karagach, the duo performed a Salsa dance to Nelly’s classic hit “Ride Wit Me.”

Donning an all red out outfit, Nelly capped off his performance by doing a backflip.

The 29th season marked a new beginning for Dancing with the Stars as Tyra Banks made her debut as the show’s new host. Former host Tom Bergeron, who had been the host of the show since 2005, was informed by ABC back in July that they were moving on.

“Just informed @DancingABC will be continuing without me.  It's been an incredible 15 year run and the most unexpected gift of my career.  I'm grateful for that and for the lifelong friendships made.  That said, now what am I supposed to do with all of these glitter masks,” Bergeron tweeted at the time.

Upon being named host of the show, Banks was filled with excitement and set her sights high. “I’ve been a fan of DWTS since its beginning,” she said in a statement at the time.

“The fun mixed with raw emotion, seeing celebrities push past their comfort zones, the sizzling dance performances… it’s always transported me to my days of turning it up 10 notches on the catwalk. Tom has set a powerful stage, and I’m excited to continue the legacy and put on my executive producer and hosting hats.”
