Katy Perry is very excited for both us and her baby girl to hear her new music. How do we know? She told us, well not directly, but still.
On Tuesday, Perry virtually appeared in a Celebrity Session to give a live performance, answer a few fan questions, and just talk about her newest album Smile. Katy, who’s expecting her first child with fiancé Orlando Bloom, explained that the track "What Makes a Woman" is the song off her fifth studio album that she's most excited to play for her unborn daughter.
"It’s a song about how you are gonna have a tough time measuring what truly makes a woman because women are so many things," she explained. "And I like to say not one thing, not just one thing. And such chameleons, and so adaptable, and so malleable and transformative. And can handle the weight of the world on their backs and do it all in heels. And make it look pretty effortless sometimes.”
Adding, "I feel very empowered creating a life and being a working woman whilst doing that. It's like, can you create limbs while promoting a record? Hello! So 'What Makes a Woman' will be a song that will kind of secretly be dedicated to her," she revealed.
Furthermore on Sunday, Katy divulged even more during her first #SmileSunday livestream Q&A which she kicked off to help fans pass the time until the album's arrival. Smile was originally set for an Aug. 14, release, but has since been pushed back to Aug. 28 due to production delays.
During the Live, Perry answered tons of questions about the album including what her favorite tracks are. Elaborating more about "What Makes a Woman,” Perry said it “is one of my favorite songs on the album. It's a great song about how women are so versatile and adaptable and incredible, and I'm realizing a new layer of that right now as I create life.”
Additionally expressing, "I like the sonic landscape of the song because it's a little more acoustic, and I'd love to go more in that direction in the future," she said of the song, which according to her will be the last track on the album. "Maybe that ending is just a beginning, you know what I'm saying?”
Another one of her favorites is the album’s second track, "Cry About It Later." Perry reveled, “it's a great song because it's kind of... there's a lot of thoughtful empowering songs on the record, but this one is, you know, sometimes you need to have a couple of drinks to not think about who you're trying to get over -- and think about who you're trying to get under!" joked Perry.
Bloom who made a brief appearance to say hello to the Katy Cats give his fiancé a kiss, said his favorite is "Daisies." However, Perry shared that the actor also took a particular liking to another song, ”I think he really likes 'Never Worn White.’” In which Perry revealed her growing baby bump for the first time in the song's video. "That song I think was perfect for revealing the good news, but I think it was a standalone, so it's not on the whole record, but that was one of his favorite songs.”
Fans also attempted to get Katy to share the album’s tracklist, but no such luck. She did, however, disclose that there are 12 songs, nine of which we haven’t heard, noting ”Never Really Over" would be the first, number two, “Cry About It Later” and "What Makes a Woman" last. Other song names she mentioned include, ”Resilient," "Only Love" and "It's Not the End of the World." And obviously there’s the title track as well.
For those diehards that wont take no for answer, Perry teased that there's a hint on one of the merch items. "A piece of merchandise has the track listing on it," she said before clarifying that the item doesn’t contain the entire tracklist. "You just haven't found it yet, have ya? A little Easter egg for you!”
