The day has arrived ya’ll, it’s October 16, which means, MTV Unplugged Presents 'Miley Cyrus Backyard Sessions’ is going down tonight at 7PM ET. And if you can’t already tell, we’re excited.
Just like last time (in 2014, which we’ll obsess over in a moment) Miley is sure to slay us with new takes of her own tracks, but also with some covers. This time around Miley’s borrowing tunes from Pearl Jam, The Cardigans and the one we didn’t even know we needed, Britney Spears' “Gimme More.”
Never one to disappoint Miley gave us exactly what we wanted and dropped a little tease of her slow and steady rendition of the 2007 bop on social, giving us just enough to have us wanting more. Also can we talk about the wardrobe and the vibe this queen is setting? We’re not worthy.
Over the years Miley has become somewhat of a cover queen, and as we’re a bit Miley obsessed, it’s time to take you to school. The list is long, but as we don’t have all day we’ll give you the cliff notes. We’ll start with 2012, and our personal favorite, in her first Backyard Session, Miley absolutely destroyed (but like in a good way) Jeff Buckley’s “Lilac Wine.” She’s also done her Godmother Dolly Parton proud and covered “Jolene,” more than once. In 2013 she shook us all to our very core with her dreamy folksy cover of Lana Del Ray’s “Summertime Sadness” that if you have yet to experience, well then, you’re welcome.
However, #currently, her 2014 MTV Unplugged performance of the Arctic Monkeys' hit ‘Why’d You Only Call Me When You’re High’ seems to be having itself viral revival on TikTok, which we could care less about because we saw it live, well live on our TV. But we get it, Miley’s cover slayed and at the time, the band took notice, AM drummer Matt Helders said it as his favorite cover version of any of their songs, telling Australian radio station Triple J, “She did some bits in there I wish we’d have done.”
And like she once told us, she can't stop, and she won't stop. Over the past few months Miley's has added to her list of covers appearing on BBC Radio 1’s Live Lounge singing Billie Eilish’s "My Future," and The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon for a rendition of Hall & Oates’ “Maneater” and we obvi can’t forget that she just slayed us and then brought us back to life with Blondie’s “Heart Of Glass."
Wait what were we talking about again? Oh yeah Miley Cyrus is a queen and everything she does is amazing, in fact, so amazing you won’t want to miss it. So be sure to tune in to MTV Unplugged tonight at 7PM ET, seriously, do it.
