“I’m here because I love Kobe and this was one of his favorite songs,” announced Beyoncé, standing at the center of the Kobe Bryant Memorial on Monday, backed by an orchestra and choir. “I want us to do it all together, and I want you to sing it so loud that they hear your love.”
In a gold blazer, the singer delivered an emotional performance of “XO” at Monday's "Celebration Of Life" event, said to be a favorite of Bryant who was being honored inside the Staples Center in Los Angeles. The NBA Champion and his 13-year-old died, along with seven others, in a helicopter crash on January 26.
At center court the GRAMMY-winner soared through her 2013 song at the beginning of the Kobe Farewell, before the stirring first piano keys of her song, “Halo.” Beyoncé led the crowd in a hopeful start to the ceremony, setting a bright and beautiful tone for the memorial.
All proceeds for the “Celebration Of Life” ceremony go to Kobe’s Mamba & Mambacita Sports Foundation.
