The Weeknd gave fans pause when he showed up to the VMAs with a bloody nose and bruises all around his face.
His entrance to the award show caused a stir online with some fans worried he was involved in a scuffle ahead of time. There was a very simple reason for his appearance though. It’s all part of the “Blinding Lights” aesthetic.
The Weeknd mimicked the look he had during the “Blinding Lights” music video at his red carpet arrival as he wore a red suit with a black shirt and tie combo and black gloves. The broken and bloody nose, bruised face, and cut lip were all a part of the gory look he was going for.
He kicked off the VMAs with a stunning performance of “Blinding Lights” high atop The Edge at Hudson Yards. It was truly an arena-sized performance in front of a crowd of no one that served as the perfect way to start the evening.
While his high-energy performance served as an uplifting moment at the beginning of the show, he was solemn during his acceptance speech using the time to share his support for Black Lives Matter and both Jacob Blake and Breonna Taylor.
“It’s really hard for me to celebrate right now and enjoy this moment, so I’m just going to say justice for Jacob Blake and justice for Breonna Taylor,” he said in his speech.
