Former Misfits drummer Joey Image has reportedly died at the age of 63.
The band has yet to confirm Image’s passing, but a Facebook post from The New York Hardcore Chronicles says, “Joey Image of The Misfits dead at 63. Rest in Peace.”
Born Joey Poole on March 5, 1957, Image joined the Misfits in November 1978 and contributed to some of the band’s most well known material including “Horror Business” and “Night of the Living Dead.”
Image continued drumming for the group until leaving the band in December 1979 after their tour of England. He briefly reunited with the group in October 2000 when their drummer at the time, Dr. Chud, had left the group. The Misfits were left without a drummer and had a gig scheduled in Fort Lauderdale, Florida when they called up Image since he lived in the area. Bassist Jerry Only convinced Image to join the band where they ran through a setlist featuring songs like “Horror Business,” “We Are 138,” “Attitude,” and more.
He played with a number of bands following his departure from Misfits including Psycho Daisies, The Undead, and more.
Image eventually relocated to South Florida where he sought treatment for liver cancer, which he was diagnosed with in 2016.
A GoFundMe was set up in 2017 to help with his medical bills. His latest update came in November 2018 where he wrote, “Well in 5 weeks I have to get another MRI and CT scan done! Coz it seems they didn’t get all the tumor so another procedure has to be done. It's called TACE procedure. Which I had before! My guess much more will be revealed as time ticks bye! Thanx for ur support!!”
