“God’s Gonna Cut You Down” is already an ominous song, made exponentially creepier by the expert, Marilyn Manson.
Manson has shared his version of the folk song, made popular by Johnny Cash for his American V: A Hundred Highways album in 2006. The Manson take doesn’t stray far from that idea, but does offer a sinister undercurrent, only amplified by the black and white video that accompanies it.
In the clip, Manson is seen point a gun, digging a grave, crawling through the desert, and ultimately burying a body he has pulled from the back of the truck. Stay tuned till the very end for the twist, poking its eye out from under the tarp.
Could “God’s Gonna Cut You Down” be our first sample from Marilyn Manson’s upcoming 11th studio album, his first since 2017’s Heaven Upside Down? The artist had previously hinted that we could expect something new before the end of 2019, and spooky season would be the perfect place to enter into a new era. The “Beautiful People” singer has been spending time in the studio with collaborator Shooter Jennings, according to recent interviews.
“It’s still to be determined, but I think it’s the album that should be called Marilyn Manson. I’m in a mode in life where I wanted to tell stories with this record, and it’s sort of like a wax museum of my thoughts, a study of the chamber of horrors in my head,” Manson told Revolver earlier this year.”I tried to paint it with words, and Shooter with sounds, so you can see and hear all of your longing, your passion and despair.”
