The power of the internet and social media is just as powerful as Maren Alford’s drum fills. The 14-year-old met Slipknot drummer Jay Weinberg less than a month after she uploaded her killer cover of “Unsainted.”
Weinberg saw her performance and invited Alford to meet him before his band’s show in Dallas over the weekend. Alford is from Texas and couldn’t believe she had a chance to rub elbows with one of her idols.
“Best day EVER hanging out with Jay Weinberg before KNOTFEST in Dallas!” she exclaimed in a Facebook post. “Not only is he a beast behind the kit, but he’s also the most encouraging, kind and generous guy! Really a dream come true to meet and spend time with him and the Slipknot show was INCREDIBLE! THANK YOU for everything Jay - you’re the BEST!”
Weinberg knows the feeling. He was a big Slipknot fan as a kid and once had the chance to meet guitarist Jim Root with the help of his dad, Max – Bruce Springsteen’s drummer. Jay recently recreated the moment and posted the amazing photos on Twitter.
Alford is well on her way to finding her own place in the spotlight. She has already performed with her all-girl trio Not Ur Girlfrenz on the last two Vans Warped Tours.
“My mom had always wanted to learn how to play drums and percussion, but her parents believed it wasn’t very ladylike and said no,” Alford told Drum Magazine. “My dad knew this story and when I was 8-years-old, he bought my mom her very own kit for Christmas! Of course, I wanted to try it, too. The first time I sat behind the kit, I knew it was definitely for me.”
