A "Jeopardy" contestant paid a heartfelt tribute to Alex Trebek on Monday's episode that left everybody, even the host, near tears.
After being stumped by an answer and realizing he had no chance of winning Final "Jeopardy!", the contestant, Dhruv Gaur, wrote down, "We (heart) you, Alex" as his answer, replacing the word love with a heart symbol.
The beloved game show host was initially surprised by the response and became choked up when he read the answer aloud.
"That's very kind of you, thank you," he said before taking a brief pause to collect himself and proceeding on with the show.
The answer cost Gaur $1,995 leaving him with just $5.
After the show, Trebek thanked each one of the contestants, giving Graur an extra moment of his time. All three contestants wore a purple ribbon to support awareness and research of pancreatic cancer.
Trebek was diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer earlier this year. Since then, he's been open about his battle and keeping fans updated on his condition.
He recently revealed that he's undergoing his second round of chemo, yet still manages to host the show with absolutely no plans to retire.
It was obvious that Trebek wasn't the only one moved to tears by the moment as #WeLoveYouAlex began trending on Twitter shortly after.
Gaur explained his decision to honor Trebek on Twitter writing, "When Final Jeopardy came up, I could’ve tried to puzzle it together, but really, just kept thinking about Alex, and thought he should know," adding, "I’m just very grateful I got the opportunity to say what I know everyone was thinking. Sending all the love. #weloveyoualex"
The Jeopardy Tournament of Champions competitors, including Gaur, are organizing a charitable play on Thursday and Friday. Gaur encouraged fans to tune in and donate $1 for each correct answer given to support pancreatic cancer research.
