“The Dukes of Hazzard” might soon be unavailable for streaming on Amazon’s IMDb TV.
Amazon is reportedly considering removing the classic '80s TV show from its library over its use of the Confederate flag as protests over racial injustice, systematic racism, and police brutality continue nationwide, Vulture reports.
According to Variety, an Amazon rep declined to comment.
The series, which ran on CBS from 1979 through 1985, revolves around two Southern cousins, Bo and Luke Duke, who get into trouble with the law in their small town of Hazzard County, Georgia.
The show has been criticized over the years for its racial undertones, particularly when it comes to the Confederate flag emblazoned on character’s iconic 1969 Dodge Charger.
TV Land pulled episodes of the series in 2015 for its depiction of the flag, The Hollywood Reporter notes.
The use of the Civil War-era flag is being highly scrutinized for its associaition with racial injustice and slavery in the wake of recent protests following the death of George Floyd.
Earlier this week, NASCAR banned Confederate flags at its racing events saying its presence “runs contrary to our commitment to providing a welcoming and inclusive event for all fans, our competitors and our industry.”
HBO Max similarly pulled Academy Award-winning 1939 film “Gone With the Wind,” which is set in the American South around the time of the Civil War.
In a statement, HBO Max said: “'Gone with the Wind' is a product of its time and depicts some of the ethnic and racial prejudices that have, unfortunately, been commonplace in American society. These racist depictions were wrong then and are wrong today, and we felt that to keep this title up without an explanation and a denouncement of those depictions would be irresponsible.”
On Tuesday, the long-running TV show “Cops” was also canceled.
The show, which documents police responding to calls and making arrests, was canceled amid the backdrop of worldwide protests over the death of George Floyd in police custody in May. Critics have been calling for an end to the show for years.
“Live PD,” another cop reality show, was pulled from the A&E Network's schedule. It's unclear if it will be returning.
