Gaten Matarazzo is going from battling Demogorgons to being the ultimate practical jokester.
The “Stranger Things” star takes center stage as the host of the new Netflix hidden-camera series “Prank Encounters,” where unsuspecting individuals get terrorized for laughs. Netflix and thrill!
“If I were you I probably wouldn’t trust anyone this Halloween season… especially me!!,” the 17-year-old tweeted a trailer for the series.“Are you ready to scream and laugh with me when #PrankEncounters hits @Netflix on October 25?”
Each episode features two complete strangers who think they are starting their first day at a new job. In reality, they’ve been set up by loved ones to be frightened as supernatural events and other creepy surprises develop at their new place of employment.
The trailer shows a montage of different individuals showing up to their “odd jobs” as they slowly begin to witness strange occurrences, such as a teddy bear that moves by itself or a bloody claw emerging from a man’s stomach in a hospital bed.
Before the terrifying scene can get too out of hand, the scared individuals are informed it’s all fake by Matarazzo.
“Guys! Guys! I know what’s happening,” he announces at the end of one episode. “You’re on my prank show, Prank Encounters.”
While the premise is similar to “Scare Tactics,” the Netflix series received some backlash when it was first announced earlier this summer. Many took issue saying it was unfair and not funny to be taking advantage of people looking for work.
Netflix defended the series by releasing a statement.
“The pranks in 'Prank Encounters' are spooky, supernatural, and over the top, and everyone had a great time,” the streaming giant said. “All participants came in with the expectation this was a one-day, hourly gig and everyone got paid for their time.”
Matarazzo is also executive producing the series, but will be back playing Dustin on season four of “Stranger Things.”
“Prank Encounters” begins streaming October 25th on Netflix.
