Jennifer Aniston Studied Matt Lauer's Last 'TODAY' Appearance for 'Morning Show'

Jennifer Aniston denies that her new show, “The Morning Show,” is a specific reference to anyone in particular.

But the "Friends" actress acknowledges that there are parallels between her new show about a male TV anchor who is fired for sexual misconduct and Lauer's story.

In the series, Aniston plays Alex Levy, a TV morning show host who is forced to address the nation after her co-host Mitch Kessler, played by Steve Carell, is fired following sexual misconduct allegations.

There are several similarities between the show and real-life situation with former “TODAY” co-anchor Matt Lauer. Lauer was fired in November of 2017 over sexual harassment allegations.

In an interview with Variety, Aniston said she was devastated when she heard the allegations against Lauer. She also said that she studied Lauer's final episode of the show and the first one without him for inspiration and prep for her new project.

“It’s such a strange thing; it felt oddly like my dad did something terrible. I trusted him and had been interviewed by him. He was there for so many moments in my life. And when ‘Friends’ was ending, it was Katie (Couric) and Matt interviewing us,” Aniston said.

During the interview Aniston questioned if Lauer was aware the November 28, 2017 appearance would be his last episode.

A new book by Ronan Farrow details the sexual assault allegations that ended Matt Lauer’s run at "TODAY."

In Farrow’s new book, “Catch and Kill,” ex-NBC staffer Brooke Nevils goes on the record, detailing an incident in a Sochi, Russia hotel room where Matt Lauer allegedly raped her, according to Variety, which obtained a copy of the book.

"The Morning Show" is available to stream on Apple TV+ on November 1.
