Netflix reported that it would automatically cancel your subscription if you haven't logged into your account for over a year.
Any user who ignores the message or doesn't confirm that they still want their account will automatically have their subscription canceled.
"We've always thought it should be easy to sign up and to cancel," Eddy Wu, who oversees product innovation Netflix, said in a blog post.
Wu also shared that if anyone cancels their account and rejoins within ten months after, the streaming giant will still have their favorites, profiles, and account details.
The company says it hopes this new approach saves people some hard-earned money.
Netflix has only a few hundred thousand inactive accounts. This is not much, considering n April, the company picked up nearly 16 million global subscribers during the first three months of 2020.
Back in April, a petition asked Netflix and streaming services to stop charging fees during the coronavirus pandemic.
Philip Kolas started a petition on Change.org, which asks popular streamers such as Netflix, Disney+, and Amazon Prime to consider offering their services for free for the next 60 days.
The petition has over 155,000 signatures as it calls upon the platforms to offer free entertainment during these trying times.
"During a worldwide viral pandemic, social distancing and personal quarantine is vitally important to stem the risk of spreading disease," Kolas wrote.
He said that millions of people worldwide are keeping themselves at home in order to prevent community spread of the COVID-19. He said streaming giants can curb the risk of boredom and isolation, which can lead to depression.
He believes the services should be offered for free for a limited time because “many people cannot afford these membership fees, especially in a time like now when many people's economic livelihood is already strained."
