We’re just days away from the season 4 premiere of “Riverdale,” which will pay homage to its late star Luke Perry and his character Fred Andrews.
In preparation for the heart-wrenching episode, the CW has dropped a new trailer that shows the town coming to grips with the news of Fred’s death, reported Buzzfeed.
The clip begins with an aerial shot of the funeral as Betty (Lili Reinhart) and Jughead (Cole Sprouse) place roses on Fred’s casket. It flashes to Betty saying, “he was a father to all of us,” as we then see his son Archie (KJ Apa) fall to his knees inside Pop’s diner.
A quick edit returns to the funeral with Archie, Jughead, Kevin (Casey Cott) and Reggie (Charles Melton) as the pallbearers carrying Fred’s casket. The trailer ends with Archie giving a speech saying: Fred Andrews will always be a part of Riverdale.
I love you so much Dad.”
The show’s executive producer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa disclosed how difficult it was shooting the tribute episode.
“We kind of knew this was going to be brutal on the cast, especially KJ [Apa], who was Luke’s main scene partner,” Aguirre-Sacasa told TVLine. “Everyone was really proud to gather to tell this tribute to Fred, and to Luke.”
Last month, the network released the first glimpse of the episode, entitled In Memoriam, in a photo which featured guest star Shannen Doherty holding hands with Archie and his friends.
Doherty, who forged a nearly 30-year friendship with Perry since working together on “Beverly Hills, 90210” in the ‘90s, plays the person who informs Archie of Fred’s death.
Perry died from a massive stroke in March at the age of 52.
Fans will want to have the tissues ready when the special episode of “Riverdale” airs on Wednesday at 8pm on The CW.
