Everyone knows Vanna White from her post turning letters on “Wheel of Fortune.”
But few people know about the tragedy that the 62-year-old “Wheel” personality has experienced over the years.
In an interview with People published on Thursday, White opened up about how she grappled with a shocking death and a miscarriage in the past, and how support from fans and her faith got her through both traumatic moments.
Four years after she began her stint on the classic game show, her husband, “Young and the Restless” actor John Gibson, died in a plane crash in 1986.
“The second I heard about it, I fell to my knees," White said. "It was just devastating.”
Although nothing could take away the pain of the moment, White said hearing fans open up about similar experiences helped her cope.
“I heard from so many people who had shared the same experience of losing someone instantly in an accident, and that really helped me," she said. "I didn’t feel like I was alone. Because when something like that happens, you immediately think you’re the only one.”
Four years after Gibson’s death, White remarried in 1990 to restauranteur George Santo Pietro. She announced her pregnancy two years later with an answer to one of the rounds on “Wheel” -- “Vanna’s pregnant.”
When she suffered a miscarriage just one week later, it was a shattering moment.
“Obviously I lost the baby, which was devastating after announcing it," White explained to People. "The good news is I was able to get pregnant again and had two beautiful, healthy children. But losing a child -- there’s nothing good about that.”
Once again, fans assisted White through the traumatic experience.
“You have to take their support and try to be strong. It’s so hard, but you just have to think, ‘What would they want me to do?’” she said.
White said her faith has also helped her find the courage and hope to move past what insurmountable moments.
“I’m a Christian and have always had my own personal relationship with God,” she said. “I don’t preach about it, because everyone’s entitled to their own beliefs. But I pray. I pray every day.”
White and Pietro split amicably in 2002. She is currently in a relationship with real estate developer John Donaldson, with whom she shares a home.
White is still on “Wheel of Future” and has no plans on leaving anytime soon.
“We’re one big family,” she said. “It’s wonderful.”
