Pat Sajak is opening up about his recent health crisis.
In an exclusive interview with "Good Morning America" on Friday, Sajak said he is back in the studio and is "feeling great."
"I've actually felt ridiculously good for several weeks. I've been back in the studio actually, doing shows. Even spinning the wheel and, you know, nothing has popped. So I think it's OK," Sajak said.
As the host discussed his recovery, he also talked about the scary situation that happened, why he had to go into the hospital.
The "Wheel of Fortune" host went on to explain the day he felt a "horrific pain" that turned out to be a blocked intestine. He said that if doctors didn't operate right away, he could have died.
"I didn't know what it [was] -- but within two and a half hours, I was in surgery," said Sajak. "It was that quick and intense," he continued.
"You couldn't do anything. I was in [a] fetal position, lying on the bed," he said. "They try to give you various drugs for the pain. And none of it -- none -- was working. And then they gave me something, I couldn't even tell you the name of it, but suddenly, I wasn't thinking about the pain. I just had these beautiful pastels and lovely faces coming out of it."
Sajak also explained the moment he thought this was his last breath.
"In the background, I could hear my wife and daughter talking. It sounded like they were a mile off, but they were right next to me," he said. "They were talking to each other. And I remember thinking, not in a morbid way, 'I think this must be death. This must be what death is like.'"
He added, "Hearing their voices, I thought, 'Boy, their lives are gonna change now.' And I felt badly for them. I didn't feel badly about dying. I felt badly that they were gonna have to deal with the aftermath. As it turned out, I was just high."
Fans of the show have been wondering when the host will resume his hosting duties, and we now have an answer, albeit, it’s slightly confusing.
Sajak is set to resume his position towards the end of December, but there’s a catch.
The game show tapes six shows in a day, which means they have a week of pre-recorded shows that will air the week of Dec 30.
This means that the episodes closing out the year were all filmed prior to Sajak’s health issues.
So, while he is technically back as host, the episode are pre-surgery and won’t reflect his absence nor will they address White’s duties as interim-host.
During Sajak’s recovery, White went from running the letterboard to filling in for 15 straight episodes.
When the show returns on Monday, Jan 6, she will host the remaining 5 episodes before turning the reins over to Sajak.
Sajak updated his fans on Twitter and revealed his official return date (without pre-recorded episodes) will be Monday, Jan 13.
He referred to it as the day that “the planets will realign, and it’s back to normal,”
Since the show continues to get impressive ratings, the dynamic duo’s contract has been renewed through 2022, according to Variety, meaning we’ll have both White and Sajak back in our living rooms in the new decade.
