The Who pulled out all the stops for their big gig at London’s 82,000 seat Wembley Stadium on Saturday. In addition to playing classics like “Pinball Wizard” and “Baba O’Riley,” Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend debuted a new song from their forthcoming album.
Backed by an orchestra, The Who launched into “Hero Ground Zero.” It will appear on the band’s 12th studio LP and 1st since 2006. The album is expected out later this year.
That wasn’t the only treat Daltrey and Townshend had up their sleeves for fans in their home country. Pearl Jam frontman Eddie Vedder, who was one of three opening acts, joined them for “The Punk and the Godfather” from Quadrophenia.
Vedder is a longtime fan of The Who, with Pearl Jam recording a version of “Love Reign o’er Me” for the 2007 film Reign Over Me. “Baba O’Riley” is also a frequent inclusion on Pearl Jam’s sets.
