Ice cream has tested positive for COVID-19.
According to Sky News, three samples of ice cream, which were produced by Chinese company Tianjin Daqiaodao Food Company, tested positive for the novel virus.
As a result, roughly 2,098 boxes of the chilly dessert were confiscated.
The outlet notes that officials believe more than double the amount -- closer to 4,836 boxes -- were contaminated.
Many of those boxes have already been sold or distributed for sale. Markets where the ice cream was sent have been notified. Customers who purchased the product have been told to notify community officials.
This begs the question: how did coronavirus contaminate the ice cream?
Officials believe that the virus was likely transferred from a person who contracted the disease and survived in the ice cream batches due to the frigid temperature and due to the fat content.
The report notes that 1,662 employees at the company were tested on Thursday and quarantining.
It’s unclear if digesting the ice cream would cause a person to contract the virus.
However, Dr. Stephen Griffin, a virologist based at the University of Leeds, told the outlet he doesn’t think the situation is cause for panic.
"It's likely this has come from a person, and without knowing the details, I think this is probably a one-off," he said.
He also added that he doesn’t believe it’s indicative of a broader issue.
"Of course, any level of contamination is not acceptable and always a cause for concern, but the chances are that this is the result of an issue with the production plant and potentially down to hygiene at the factory," Griffin said.
