A 6-year-old boy from Wyoming is being hailed as a hero after throwing himself in front of a dog that was charging for his younger sister.
The boy, Bridger Walker, was attacked so badly that he needed 90 stitches in his face after being bitten on his left cheek, according to his aunt, Nikki Walker, who posted about the incident on her Instagram.
Despite the harrowing episode, Bridger still managed to walk his little sister away, leading her by the hand to hide from the canine.
“If someone had to die, I thought it should be me,” Bridger said of his brave display, according to his aunt.
Nikki made the post to round up support for her nephew, who is recovering after the attack which reportedly happened on July 9.
The original post included a few adorable pictures of Bridger and his sister from over the years, a close-up of his face while he was being treated in the hospital, and a picture of him standing with his arm around his sister with his arm around her with his healing scars on his face.
“Hey, all,” Nikki began her caption. “Please, share my nephew’s story so that it gets as much exposure as it can. We know that our little hero would love some words of encouragement from his favorite heroes.”
And it worked. Nikki was overwhelmed by the support for her posts about her heroic nephew, which have received hundreds of thousands of likes and tens of thousands of comments.
On Wednesday afternoon, she posted a picture of Bridger at home in a Spider-Man costume, smiling at the camera, scars and all.
Nikki reflected on the unexpected journey and her surprise at how many people the story reached.
“Have y’all noticed that I have no idea what I’m doing yet? #UmmmIAccidentallyWentViral?” she wrote, starting her caption with a joke.
Nikki continued: “When I first posted for Bridger, I expected maybe 500 likes at most and maybe a couple dozen reshares. But here we are. So much love from all walks of life (including a few celebs)! And we just got off a call with a friendly neighborhood idol. (Pic is of Bridger’s reaction right after the call.) Bridger is over the moon! Can’t wait to show him what’s next: a message from some guy who doesn’t like bullies. Gotta wait for the stardust to clear from his eyes first, though. Mission accomplished, everyone!”
