9-Year-Old Girl Is Youngest Person to Die From COVID-19 in Florida

A 9-year-old girl is the youngest person to die from coronavirus in Florida, according to state officials.

The girl, who was from Putnam County, passed away from the virus despite records showing that hers was not a travel-related case and she had not recently been in contact with anyone who tested positive, CNN reports.

Mary Garcia, Putnam County Health Officer, told the outlet that she was unaware of any underlying health issues in the girl’s case.

The girl is the fifth minor in the state to die from COVID-19, according to health records. The others are an 11-year-old boy in Miami-Dade County, an 11-year-old girl in Broward County, a 16-year-old girl in Lee County and a 17-year-old boy in Pasco County.

Putnam County is located in northeastern Florida, between Jacksonville, Gainesville, St. Augustine, and Daytona Beach.

The county has had at least 11 fatalities stemming from coronavirus complications since April 1.

Florida is a current hot spot for the virus in the United States.

On July 12, Florida reported 15,299 cases of coronavirus — more than all of Europe combined for the same day with 15,284 cases.
