Hold on to your DiGiornos!
Your long days on the couch are about to be turned upside down as the country appears to be on the verge of a national frozen pizza shortage. Not without my Totino's!
Many of the top brands of frozen pizza are experiencing an increase in sales of up to 190% as most of the country remains homebound under stay-at-home orders from coast-to-coast.
“I’ve been in this business over 25 years, [and] I’ve never seen a spike like this across the country,” Newman’s Own president and COO Dave Best told Ad Week. “This is unprecedented.”
According to data analytics firm IRI, Americans have bought approximately $275 million worth of frozen pizza since the start of the pandemic in March, an increase of 92% compared to the same time last year, reported the publication.
On top of their tastiness, shoppers are hoarding boxes of the easy-to-make treats in their freezers since they can last for a pretty long time.
Due to the demand, some stores are limiting the amount of frozen pizzas customers can purchase in one outing.
One shopper shared an image of a Whole Foods sign making it known that only four units of frozen pizza were allowed in order to “support all customers.”
While another person tweeted about the dire pizza sitch at their local supermarket by writing: “This man in the supermarket was yelling yesterday ‘y’all really ran out of frozen pizza, not one frozen pizza, what am I supposed to do?!’”
If you can’t get your hands on the frozen variety, there’s always the option of making your own, assuming you can find some Boboli.
Otherwise hungry fans can take a break from binge watching “Tiger King” and order a pizza from favorite local restaurant or one of the nationwide chains.
Whatever you do, stay strong, because we will get through the Great American Frozen Pizza Shortage together.
