Former 39th President of the United States, Jimmy Carter, and his wife of nearly 75 years, Rosalynn Carter, missed their first Presidential inauguration in 44 years.

Carter, now aged 96, and his wife, aged 93, sent their well wishes from afar as President Joe Biden was sworn in as the 46th President of the United States.

A spokesperson from the Carter Center said Carter and his wife “will not travel to Washington for the inauguration but have sent their best wishes to the President-elect Biden and Vice President-elect [Kamala] Harris and look forward to a successful administration,” according to USA Today.

Jimmy Carter, who is the oldest living president, and his wife are among several prominent people who were not in attendance at the inauguration, many of whom stayed home due to concerns over the coronavirus pandemic. Security concerns following the breach of the Capitol building two weeks ago also deterred people from attending the historic event, according to USA Today.

President Joe Biden said he was not worried about security concerns prior to taking office.

"I'm not afraid of taking the oath outside," he told reporters on January 11th after receiving his COVID-19 vaccine. "I think it's critically important that there be a real serious focus on holding those folks who engaged in sedition and threatened people's lives, defaced public property, caused great damage, that they be held accountable."

President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris' presidency has made history as the first time a woman in the history of the United States, a Black woman, and woman of South Asian descent, will work inside of the presidential office.

President Biden, and Vice President Harris replace former President Donald Trump, who is currently back at Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach, Florida, according to CNN.
