In a meeting prior to the press conference to be held at 12 EST, the president spoke on impeachment inquiries and other issues including conflicts with Turkey and Syria. Trump is expected to address many of these issues again at the press conference.
Prior to the press conference, Trump met with Mattarella in a bilateral meeting during which he spoke about the the Kurds in northeastern Syria. "They are no angels, by the way," Trump said of the Kurds, a sentiment that he repeated at the press conference later on.
Democrats and Republicans alike have been skeptical of Trump's recent decision to authorize troops in northeastern Syria last week. As Kurds guard several prisons containing former ISIS fighters, concerns persist that some of the prisoners could escape. Trump is expected to speak further on engaging in the conflict.
Trump and Mattarella will hold a joint news conference on Wednesday as well, coming just a day after the Democratic presidential debate when all candidates on the stage openly supported the impeachment inquiry against President Trump.
Trump took to Twitter following the debates to express his reaction to the scathing remarks from Democratic candidates.
"You would think there is NO WAY that any of the Democrat Candidates that we witnessed last night could possibly become President of the United States. Now you see why they have no choice but to push a totally illegal & absurd Impeachment of one of the most successful Presidents," the tweet reads.
