The coronavirus has spread throughout the world since the first cases were detected in central China in December.
Cases of the virus, which originated in the Chinese city of Wuhan, have been responsible for thousands of deaths in mainland China. Now, the illness has begun to threaten the lives of those in other countries.
Johns Hopkins University provided NBC News with data surrounding the spread of the coronavirus, which then was turned into an interactive map. The map shows the spread of the virus since late January, and how time has affected the global outbreak.
According to this map, as of February 26, there have been approximately 81, 397 cases throughout the world. On January 22, there were only 555 cases.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention warned Americans to prepare for a “significant disruption” from the virus.
President Donald Trump hosted a press conference on Wednesday, where the director of the CDC, Dr. Nancy Messonnier, spoke. “Ultimately, we expect we will see community spread in this country," she said.
Trump then appointed Vice President Mike Pence to oversee the federal government's response to the coronavirus.
Since this virus has spread, the demand for face masks has gone up. Amazon users have noticed a significant spike in the price of masks due to the high demand for the masks in various countries.
Back in January, the CDC confirmed the first human-to-human transmission of the coronavirus in the U.S., which took place in Illinois. The husband of a Chicago woman contracted the disease from his wife, who was the first case of the virus in the state.
