Tropical Storm Beta Forms in Southwestern Gulf of Mexico

The busy 2020 hurricane season continues with Tropical Storm Beta, which grew from a depression in the southwestern Gulf of Mexico this afternoon.

No storm watches or warnings have yet been posted for Beta, but the National Hurricane Center said that could come tonight or tomorrow.

"Beta is moving toward the north-northeast near 9 mph," said NHC forecaster Jack Beven. "This general motion is expected through Saturday. A slow westward motion is forecast to begin late Saturday or Saturday night, and this motion will likely continue into early next week."

Longer-range forecasts show Beta turning north-northeast before the center crosses over land.

"Interests throughout the western Gulf of Mexico should monitor the progress of this system and future updates to the forecast," said Beven.
