Artist Lorna Simpson also shared the experience with her daughter, writer and actor Zora Simpson Casebere, who provided an accompanying essay titled “Anthems of Possibility.”
The collaboration is "quite incredible,” Simpson said while on set. “As an artist, I’m able to deliver these unusual images of someone who is so well-known and so recognizable… It’s an amazing opportunity.”
Rihanna agreed. "It's like magic."
Simpson, whose career spans three decades, had already been on RiRi's radar for years. "Lorna is a legend,” she tells the magazine. "Honestly, I just didn't think I could get her." Luckily for her, her creative director Jaleel Weaver gently nudged her to take the first steps.
Set your reminders: The new issue of ESSENCE hits shelves Tuesday, January 19.
