A possible marriage between Alex Rodriguez and the New York Mets appears to be inching closer to reality.
According to RADIO.COM Sports MLB Insider Bob Nightengale, several MLB executives believe that the A-Rod/Jennifer Lopez ownership group is now the clear-cut favorite to purchase the Mets.
The celebrity power couple is competing with billionaire Steve Cohen and 76ers/Devils owner Joshua Harris among potential suitors to buy the club from the Wilpon family.
According to Sportico, the best and final bids are due by Aug. 31 – and Nightengale reports that the A-Rod/J.Lo ownership group has shown it has the money.
The Wilpons have been eyeing a sale of the franchise since late last year, when it began negotiations with Cohen and had a verbally agreed upon deal to cede 80 percent control of the team to Cohen – who currently has a minority stake in the team – over the next five years.
However, that deal fell apart in the final hour – which opened the door for other suitors such as the former New York Yankees slugger and current ESPN broadcaster to throw his hat in the ring.
