The long-suffering Portland Sea Dogs—it’s been 14 years since their last Eastern League triumph—are ready to dance the night away. And wouldn’t you too after an undefeated season? To commemorate the club’s momentous accomplishment, the long-time Boston Red Sox Double-A affiliate is selling “Undefeated Tour” t-shirts for $29.99 on their team website. The Sea Dogs’ entire 2020 schedule is printed on the back of each shirt.
If you’re not in on the joke, the team’s claim is indeed accurate. The Sea Dogs didn’t lose a game in 2020, but that’s only because they didn’t play any due to the coronavirus. While MLB teams, including Portland’s parent club in Boston, are slated to resume play later this month, minor league squads will not return to the field this season.
Obviously, these are dire times. Hundreds of minor-league players—many of whom weren’t making much to begin with—are out of work due to the pandemic. But at least the Sea Dogs, who haven’t tasted the fruits of postseason baseball or even a winning season since 2014, are keeping their heads held high, embracing less-than-ideal circumstances with humor and positivity.
