With LeBron James coming off an injury-ridden season and turning 35 in December, many believe the Los Angeles Lakers star is no longer the best player in the league.
Former NBA player Kendrick Perkins is among those who shares that sentiment, tweeting out a top 10 list with Milwaukee Bucks star Giannis Antetokuonmpo ahead of James as his No. 1 player.
On Thursday, Perkins joined RADIO.COM’s “Scal & Pals” show and said that James texted Perkins about his rankings.
“I had Giannis at No. 1 because I had to show respect that he won the MVP last year, his team had the best record in the league, had the best offense, best defense in the league last year,” Perksins said. “I texted LeBron and said that’s the only reason I had you No. 2. Know what he told me? ‘In due time I will reclaim my throne.’”
In 55 games last season, James still averaged 27.4 points, 8.5 rebounds and 8.3 assists per game, but was visibly frustrated with a young and inexperienced squad around him in his first season with the Lakers and missed the playoffs for the first time since 2004-05 season.
This year, however, James will have All-Star Anthony Davis by his side as he tries to get back onto the championship track.
Yet, James will also be doing this while attacking other business and entertainment ventures — something “Scal & Pals” host Brian Scalabrine raised as a concern.
Perkins said that should be the least of anyone’s worries.
“We acting like this is new. He’s been doing this,” Perkins said. “He’s been on commercials. This is not his first movie. This is not his first TV show or all these different things outside of basketball. He was doing this when he was in Cleveland; he was doing this in Miami. LeBron knows how to be a true professional.”
