Former NBA star Pau Gasol paid tribute to the late Kobe Bryant and his late daughter, Gianna, in perhaps the best way possible – by naming his newborn daughter after her.
Gasol announced the birth of Elisabet Gianna Gasol on Sunday via Instagram – the middle name the same as his former teammate ‘s daughter, who died alongside her father and seven others in a helicopter crash in January.
The 40-year-old Gasol, a native of Spain, announced the news in both English and Spanish.
“Our little one has finally arrived!! The delivery went really well and we couldn’t be happier!! Elisabet Gianna Gasol, a very meaningful name for our super beautiful daughter!! #girldad,” he wrote.
Gasol and Bryant played seven season in Los Angeles, winning two NBA Finals championships together as they developed a close relationship.
If naming his newborn daughter after Gianna was not heartwarming enough, Vanessa Bryant, Kobe’s widow, is also the godmother.
Vanessa confirmed as much on her Instagram account.
“My goddaughter is here!!!!” she wrote. “Congratulations. Love you 3 so much! So touched by your request to honor my Gigi. Can’t wait to hold Elsabet Gianna Gasol.”
