Shaquille O’Neal is hosting his annual Super Bowl party, but this year, he’s adding an extra element to honor “brother” Kobe Bryant.
On Sunday, a tragic helicopter crash took the lives of Kobe Bryant, his daughter Gianna, and 7 others. After much deliberation, friend and former teammate of Bryant’, O’Neal, took to Twitter to reveal his thoughts around his annual Super Bowl “Fun House" event in the wake of the horrible crash.
“Been going back and forth the past couple of days on if I should even have my event in Miami this weekend,” the post begins. “Part of me wanted to stay to myself as I reflect what my brother and his family mean to me and my family. But in thinking what would Kobe want, what would he do?”
The post goes on to say that Bryant would have wanted O’Neal and company to go forward with the event. “Kobe would want us to push through and celebrate life. So let’s do just that,” O’Neal writes.
Proceeds from the Friday night event will all benefit the families of the victims of the helicopter crash as well as the Kobe and Vanessa Bryant Foundation. “Together we will celebrate all those who lost their lives in Sundays tragedy,” O’Neal concludes.
On Tuesday night, O'Neal opened up about the pain of losing Bryant during TNT's hour-long special honoring the former basketball star. In an emotional moment, O'Neal said, "Haven't felt pain that sharp in a while...it definitely changes me."
