NBC's top football broadcast tandem let it be known on Sunday night that they weren't crazy about being "compelled" to wear face masks while calling the Eagles-49ers game, hosted by San Francisco.

Legendary play-by-play announcer Al Michaels and analyst Cris Collinsworth suggested during the opening of the broadcast that it wasn't their choice to don white surgical masks -- and appeared to throw a local elected under the bus over the episode.

“The officials have compelled us to wear masks during the game," Michaels said. "And so that is the story.

"I'm Al Michaels," he said to Collinsworth. "You are?"

"I don't know who I am," Collinsworth replied, apparently shaking his head in disapproval.

A top official in Santa Clara county, home of the Niners, fired back at the broadcasters -- with a reference to President Trump's recent bout with coronavirus, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

“We wouldn’t want them to end up like the president,” said chief executive Jeffrey Smith, the Chronicle reported.

The article also spelled out California's mask rules:

The order issued by the California Department of Public Health outlines nearly a dozen situations in which cloth face coverings are required, including when a person is in an indoor public place or line waiting to enter, riding public transportation, and working at many offices and other places.

The order also requires people to wear masks when they are outdoors in public spaces if they are within 6 feet of others who are not members of their household.

Businesses must require face coverings for employees and customers.

The NFL has been a flashpoint in the debate over facial coverings -- but most of that debate so far has centered around coaches and other team personnel.

The league recently slapped several coaches with six-figure fines and threatened to dock draft picks for further violations after they were seen without their masks on the sidelines during games.

Most famously, Ravens coach John Harbaugh unleashed an unmasked tirade inches from an official on Monday Night Football in Week 3, prompting the NFL referees' union to lobby the league for a new unsportsmanlike conduct penalty for coaches who violate mask rules.
