Budda Baker reacts to DK Metcalf tackle: ‘How’d he catch my ass?’

Tyler Lockett erupted for an obscene 15-200-3 receiving line this past Sunday night, but all anyone can talk about is his Seahawks teammate, fellow receiver DK Metcalf, who reached a blistering 22.64 mph on his touchdown-saving tackle, denying Budda Baker’s bid for a pick-six.

Metcalf’s wheels were the talk of Twitter with fans marveling at the 22-year-old’s otherworldly athleticism. The 2019 second-rounder was mostly held in check at Arizona, registering just two catches for a season-low 23 yards (his 48-yard touchdown scamper in overtime was negated by a holding flag) in the losing effort. But even days later, we’re still reliving the moment when Metcalf, in a remarkable display of hustle, caught Baker eight yards shy of the pylon.

Cardinals cornerback Patrick Peterson, who had the privilege of seeing Metcalf’s extraordinary tackle in person, couldn’t contain his admiration for the 6’4” receiver, describing him as an “oversized gazelle running down the sideline.” A mic’d up Baker expressed similar disbelief, unable to comprehend how Metcalf tracked him down.

“How’d he catch my ass?” an astonished Baker asked back on the sideline. “I’m tired as hell, boy. He ran me the f--- down.” A two-time Pro Bowler with 4.45 speed, Baker doesn’t lose many footraces, but in this instance, Metcalf had him dead to rights.

Of course, I’m not breaking any new ground here. You already knew Metcalf, a comically-ripped Greek god of an athlete with abs expertly sculpted by Michelangelo, was a complete freak of nature. Given what he showed Sunday, Metcalf would probably be a standout defender if Pete Carroll opted to use him in that capacity. The Seahawks’ bleeding secondary could sure use a difference-maker—no team has permitted more passing yards on a per game basis this season (368.7).
