The Miami Dolphins will not go winless this season, courtesy of the New York Jets.
Former Jets quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick threw for 288 yards and three touchdowns, while the Dolphins defense sacked Sam Darnold three times and picked him off once in a 26-18 for their first win of a season that was designed for tanking.
The defining play of the game came with 6:33 left in the fourth quarter with the Jets trailing 24-15 and the ball on their own 9-yard line. There was a miscommunication between Darnold and the offensive line, and the ball was snapped over Darnold’s shoulder and through the back of the end zone for a safety.
The Jets appeared to be in for a big day on their first drive of the game when Darnold led the team on an 11-play, 75-yard drive to take an early 7-0 lead.
But on the Jets’ second possession, kicker Sam Ficken missed a 49-yard field goal and things went all downhill from there for Gang Green.
The Dolphins scored 21 unanswered points to take a 21-7 lead and led 21-15 at halftime which they did not relinquish.
Jets fans on social media had clearly seen enough of first-year head coach Adam Gase, who was fired by the Dolphins last year. Many believe the Jets should fire the head coach, including RADIO.COM's own Mike Francesa:
The win for Miami was the first for head coach Brian Flores in a season that many believe the Dolphins to be tanking in order to land the No. 1 pick in the 2020 NFL Draft.
With the victory, the Cincinnati Bengals are now the only winless team in the league. The Jets, Dolphins and Atlanta Falcons are all 1-7.
