Chiefs' Laurent Duvernay-Tardif's lab coat, scrubs now artifacts at Pro Football Hall of Fame

The 2020 NFL season will likely hold its own section in Canton's Pro Football Hall of Fame at some point in time. After all, we are currently witnessing an era of unprecedented football action due to the coronavirus pandemic, be it on the field, on the sidelines, in the stands or outside the stadiums.

Over the weekend, the Hall of Fame received a pair of items that fit into the last category, courtesy of Chiefs offensive lineman Laurent Duvernay-Tardif.

Duvernay-Tardif sacrificed his time on the gridiron for a role at the front line during this difficult period.

"This is one of the most difficult decisions I have had to make in my life, but I must follow my convictions and do what I believe is right for me personally," Duvernay-Tardif wrote in a statement regarding his decision to sit out. "Being at the front line during this offseason has given me a different perspective on this pandemic and the stress it puts on individuals and our health care system. I cannot allow myself to potentially transmit the virus in our communities simply to play the sport that I love. If I am to take risks, I will do it caring for patients."

Duvernay-Tardif earned his medical degree from McGill University, one of the top schools in Canada and across the world for various science-related subjects.

"It's been eight years that I've been working for that moment," Duvernay-Tardif told ESPN, regarding his then-upcoming graduation in May of 2018. "Since the day I got drafted, I promised myself I was going to finish my studies and get that M.D. while I was still playing. It's one of those life projects that you promise yourself you're going to accomplish, and I'm on the verge of doing it, so I'm pretty excited."

The undeniably talented NFL lineman and doctor — how's that for a resume headline — deserves this recognition from the Hall of Fame and should continue to receive praise for all that he's done.
