Among the trending storylines in recent weeks has been the significant decline in ratings across all sports, including the NBA Finals, World Series and even the NFL.

According to former NFL linebacker and current Fox Sports analyst Emmanuel Acho, this is actually a good thing.

Acho, who also hosts in own web series titled, “Uncomfortable Conversations with a Black Man” was participating in Yahoo! Finance’s All Markets Summit, which included significant figures such as Bill Gates and Dr. Anthony Fauci, when Acho explained his feelings on the current state of sports.

“I’m glad sports are down,” he said. “I’m a sports guy. You can cut this for my bosses and the world to see. There is a presidential election going on. There is a pandemic going on. I would hope to God that a game – which all sports are, is a game – is lesser important than lives.

“So, when people are like, ‘oh, sports are down,’ I’m like [begins clapping] ‘bravo.’ Because at least that shows me we have our priorities right in this country. Sports will pick back up, they always do. I don’t have an issue with sports being down.”

The 29-year-old Acho played for the Browns, Eagles and Giants before pursuing a media career where he has become a vocal voice on issues outside of the sports world – a path many athletes have taken in recent years.

Some fans point to the political gestures and opinions as one of the reasons why they have tuned out of sports, but Acho does not believe the issues being raised should be considered political.

“When you talk about things being political, life and death is not political,” he said. “It’s just not.”
