Is former Ohio State defensive end Chase Young the most dominant defensive prospect to enter the NFL Draft in the last five seasons? One NFL insider doesn't think so.
When asked Thursday, RADIO.COM NFL Insider Brian Baldinger said he didn't believe that Young was as impressive of a prospect as his former college teammate Nick Bosa was last year, or as Myles Garrett was when the Cleveland Browns made him the No. 1 overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft.
"I don't think he's as good as either one of those guys," Baldinger told Nick Kostos and Ross Tucker on 'You Better You Bet.' "I don't think he has the power. Myles Garrett can just ruin you, really badly. And Nick Bosa can beat you in a lot of different ways...and also, with just extreme effort. If San Francisco wins that Super Bowl, he might very well be the MVP of the game. And everybody knew, you had to put two sets of eyes on him on every given play, otherwise he's going to beat any one-on-one blocks. I don't see Chase like that right now. Myles Garrett's power is as good as anybody in this business right now. His speed-to-power is unsurpassed. I don't see that from Chase Young. I see athletic ability, I see a frame, I see fluid movement - I see a lot of stuff. I don't see Nick Bosa or Myles Garrett in watching Chase Young right now."
Of course, there's plenty of room to still be a great player, even if you aren't as good as either Bosa or Garrett. Those two and Aaron Donald are arguably the most gifted defensive linemen in the sport right now. That can be true, and Young could also still have an extremely impressive career in front of him.
For what it's worth, Young had 16.5 sacks in 2019, more than Bosa or any Ohio State Buckeye ever had in a single season. He did that despite being suspended for two games for an NCAA rules violation.
In our latest RADIO.COM Sports NFL Mock Draft, Young heads to the Washington Redskins with the No. 2 overall pick.
