There is no wide receiver in the league Patrick Mahomes would rather have on his team over Tyreek Hill.
A day after Hill put on an electrifying performance – hauling in 13 catches for 269 yards and three touchdowns in a 27-24 win over the Bucs – Mahomes was left boasting about his receiver during his weekly appearance on Kansas City’s 610 Sports Radio’s “The Drive.”
“I think the biggest thing is way he’s developed as route runner and how many contested catches he makes,” Mahomes said. “You see it week in and week out, he’s consistent, he’s the most dangerous guy in football and if he’s not getting double covered, then he’s going to make a lot things gonna happen.”
Hill already has a career-high 13 touchdown catches this season, which leads the league along with his 1,021 receiving yards. Only Justin Jefferson of the Minnesota Vikings has more receiving plays of 20 yards or more, and leads Hill in that category by just one.
While Hill’s 5-foot-10, 185-pound stature is not necessarily the prototype for a top NFL receiver, there is an argument to be made that he is indeed the best in the game and Mahomes certainly seems to think so.
“Yeah, I mean, there is no one in this league that I would have on this team other than him,” Mahomes said. “The way he’s able to win one-on-one [coverage] consistently and the ability he has to make tough catches in traffic. He’s special guy. There’s no one else like him in NFL. He helps everyone else get open because you have to double cover him every single time, otherwise he’s going to make you pay like he did yesterday.”
If there is one criticism Mahomes has of Hill, it was of the wide receiver’s backflip on the second touchdown of the game.
“It wasn’t one of his best. He usually lands it, doesn’t he?” Mahomes said. “Nah, it was cool. The fact he is that open and he can do it speaks for itself. Hopefully, next time he could maybe land it.”
