Patrick Mahomes and Lamar Jackson both have plenty in common.
They were both passed over for other quarterbacks in the NFL Draft, they both set NFL records and won an MVP award in their first full season as a starting quarterback and they both have their teams at 2-0 heading into a highly anticipated Week 3 matchup with one another.
Mahomes, of course, has the Super Bowl ring and Jackson does not, but the Chiefs quarterback joined 610 Sports Radio Kansas City’s “The Drive” on Monday afternoon and acknowledged that there is one thing he wishes he could emulate from the Ravens quarterback.
“I guess the way he’s able to run in the open field,” Mahomes said. “The third-and-20 yard run I had yesterday, he probably would have scored.”
Mahomes is certainly not going to be confused for his speed, although he did make some plays with his legs in Sunday’s 23-20 overtime win against the Chargers, rushing for 57 yards on six carries.
But Jackson brings a whole different kind of flair and has made the Ravens perhaps the biggest threat to the Chiefs in the AFC.
“He’s a talented player,” Mahomes added. “He’s developed as a passer. He passes the ball really well; I think it’s underrated how well he throws the football. He’s a special athlete and they have a lot of great football players on that team, so it’s going to be a heck of a challenge for us.”
While Mahomes may wish he had Jackson’s speed in the open field, he stopped short in taking Jackson in a foot race, though.
Instead, Mahomes is backing his teammate when given the choice between Jackson and Tyreek Hill.
“I’m taking Tyreek,” he said. “I think Tyreek is pretty quick out there.”
