According to a report in Politico, President Donald Trump plans to award Bill Belichick the Presidential Medal of Freedom, which is the nation's highest civilian honor, on Thursday.
The Patriots did not immediately respond to a request for comment. It is unclear at this time if he will accept.
Belichick has communicated with Trump in the past, including writing him a letter prior to the 2016 election.
“He's a very good friend of mine. He's a winner,” Trump said to Hugh Hewitt during a radio interview last summer. “You know, if I ever had a military battle, I'd call up Belichick and say what do you think? What do you think? Give me a couple of ideas.”
Appearing on Ordway, Merloni & Fauria, Belichick responded with: “I am flattered by that. But, I’ll just stick to coaching football.”
The Patriots did not make the playoffs this season for the first time since 2008.
