While there's a chance Saquon Barkley's mother shows up on the New York Giants sideline with a bowl of Campbell's soup this Sunday, his father has other plans.
Per Dan Duggan of The Athletic, Barkley says that his dad plans to wear his Joe Namath New York Jets jersey Sunday, when Barkley's Giants play...the Jets. That jersey will be in addition to the Jets tattoo that Barkley's dad has:
Barkley did confirm that his dad will still root for him. In his second season in the NFL, Barkley has 401 rushing yards and 228 receiving yards in six games. Barkley missed three plus games this season with a high-ankle sprain that he suffered in the team's Week 3 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Independent of who Barkley's father will be rooting for Sunday, it would reflect very poorly on the Giants - and potentially affect the future of second-year head coach Pat Shurmur - if the team loses to the lowly Jets. While the Giants are just 2-7, the Jets are 1-7. The Jets lost to the previously winless Miami Dolphins last week, and there's growing speculation that their head coach, Adam Gase, may not survive an ugly first season in New York.
Though the Jets will technically be the home team Sunday, it will essentially be a neutral site game, as the two teams both play their home games at MetLife Stadium. Barkley's dad will perhaps best personify what will likely be a crowd that features both Jets and Giants fans.
