Hopes for the 2019 Chicago Bears were so high this summer, people were wagering on Mitch Trubisky to win the MVP.
Now, some of those bettors will be receiving a bailout.
Trubisky’s 2019 campaign has been so disappointing, that PointsBet Sportsbook — which takes bets in New Jersey and Iowa — is offering a refund to anyone who bet on the third-year Bears quarterback to take home the league’s Most Valuable Player Award.
Trubisky opened at 100-1 odds, which many saw as favorable for a darkhorse candidate, and quickly improved to 50-1.
Yet, through Week 9 of the NFL season, those odds are now at +50,000, meaning a $100 bet would win you $50,000.
PointsBet is referring to the gesture as a “Good Karma Refund.” While it may lose the book money, giving bettors a refund could prompt them to place wagers they may have been reluctant to make with their Trubisky money gone.
Last season, Trubisky threw for 3,223 yards, 24 touchdowns and 12 interceptions while going 11-3 in 14 games to lead the Bears to the NFC North title in a Pro Bowl season.
This year, he’s taken a step back. He has thrown for 1,217 yards and just five touchdowns and three interceptions in seven games. He is averaging a career-low 5.6 yards per pass attempt.
Perhaps Trubisky can begin to turn things around in Week 10 against the Detroit Lions, but even if he does, it will still be a far cry from MVP-caliber.
